A great rule to keep in mind with regard to recovery gear is “expect to self-recover”. Synthetic winch ropes, soft shackles, and recovery straps with loops instead of metal hooks are the safest options, and what we primarily recommend. Factor 55 makes some top-quality winching products as mentioned above, and we install their winch line shackle mounts regularly! Traction boards, such as those made by MaxTrax, are a great recovery tool for sand, snow, or mud and can be used in combination with other recovery efforts to aid in freeing a stuck vehicle.
